FAQs

Q: What does the Hospice do?

A: We care for people from age 18 with life threatening conditions - mainly cancer. We actively treat symptoms, provide pain relief and a wide range of physical and emotional care to improve the quality of life for the patient. We also provide care and support for their families.

Q: Can I look around the Hospice on behalf of my relative?

A: We are always happy to show carers and those for whom we may be caring around. If you have been referred to our services the appropriate manager will arrange this for you.

Q: Does everyone die there?

A: Often, people think that when you are admitted to the Hospice you will not come out. Half of our patients do go home again, to the care of our Community team, the GP and District Nursing staff.

Q: Is it a sad place?

A: We do have sad times but you will often hear laughter in the Hospice as we enjoy times with our patients and families. We have been known to arrange weddings and Christenings at a days notice!

Q: Can I book a bed while the family have a holiday?

A: Part of our criteria for admission is that the patient has specialist needs. Regretfully, we are unable to offer respite for family holidays, but there are other local agencies that could be approached - your GP may be able to offer advice.

Q: Do I have to pay?

A:No, all our service are free.

Q: Can I stay for a long time?

A: For many patients, once the distressing symptoms are under control, we start to plan the patient's discharge, with the patient and family being fully involved. Occasionally, the home circumstances may be difficult and, should this be the case, our Social Care Team may become involved to consider alternatives such as a Nursing Home.

Q: Do you have to be a Christian to go there?

A: The Hospice accepts patients from multi faiths or no faith. Religion is not a criteria for care.

Q: What is Lymphoedema?

A: Lymphoedema is tissue swelling due to a failure in lymphatic drainage. It generally occurs in the arms or legs and may be a condition from birth or may develop as a result of some forms of cancer and its treatment.
