Lymphoedema is a swelling of fluid (oedema) called lymph that can build up in the tissues under the surface of the skin and is commonly seen in arms and legs. People can occasionally be born with it - primary lymphoedema - or it can occur after treatment for some types of cancer - secondary lymphoedema.
Willen Hospice is the only provider for the treatment of lymphoedema in Milton Keynes and until recently only had the resource to help those with secondary lymphoedema. In the Spring of 2006, the Hospice managed to secure additional funding from the Milton Keynes Primary Care Trust (MKPCT). As a result, the lymphoedema service at Willen Hospice is now able to provide treatment for both types of lymphoedema for patients living in Milton Keynes. Based on local health population studies, it is anticipated that the service could eventually provide treatment to as many as 400 patients at any one time.
In order to accommodate the growing number of patients, additional staff have been recruited and a larger clinical area developed by the Hospice. The service is currently in the developmental stage; working with MKPCT and other health service providers in the area.
Treatment includes the application of compression (multi-layer bandages and hosiery), lymphatic drainage (massage) and advice on skin care and exercise. Treatment is offered on an outpatient basis, Monday to Friday. In addition, patients are treated in the Hospice itself and in the community. Due to the demands placed on the service, patients can only be treated in their own home if they are too frail to attend for an appointment.
Jane Board, Lymphoedema Nurse Specialist, commented:
“The lymphoedema team are looking forward to the challenge of providing a service that enables people with this ailment to receive treatment that is designed to meet their individual needs. In addition, by working in partnership with the patient, it is the services intention to improve the symptoms associated with lymphoedema and ultimately the patient's quality of life.”
If you do have either type of lymphoedema and would like to use the Hospice’s service please contact your GP in the first instance for a referral.
