Willen Hospice is delighted with the news as this role will help to support the emotional needs of children in Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas, when a family member is under the care of the Hospice.
The Hospice identified the need for such support through its increasing contact with people with young families. Last year the Hospice was fortunate to receive funding from a charitable trust to employ a Family Support Worker on a part-time short-term contract as a pilot. This work confirmed the need for a Family Support Worker to develop a specialist support service for children and families.
The Hospice is extremely pleased that Macmillan Cancer Support has agreed to fund the post for five years and staff at the Hospice are currently recruiting to fill this role. It will be based in Willen Hospice, but will encompass community and outreach work.
Clare Theobald, Social Care Manager at Willen Hospice commented:
"We are delighted that Macmillan Cancer Support is prepared to fund this post. The Family Support Service is much needed and will support and complement the wide range of services currently offered by the Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support".
Jacqui Horne, Macmillan Development Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, commented:
"Macmillan Cancer Support is dedicated to improving the lives of people living with cancer, and this means families as well as the person directly affected. We know that people in the hospice, particularly those with young families, will greatly appreciate the added support that the Family Support Worker will be able to provide, in helping them to adjust to their new family circumstances."
