Lynn McBrearty recently took on Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Willen Hospice. See what she has to say about her experience.

On 19th October I arrived at Heathrow to start a unique journey. Along with 27 fellow trekkers we boarded a flight to Kilimanjaro International airport; none of us knew what lay ahead.
Our ascent of Kilimanjaro began at Machame Gate. For three days we climbed through the rain forest and into desert like conditions. At night we ate food prepared by porters and slept in the camps prepared by the same porters. The temperature went from extremely hot to incredibly cold.
We started our summit ascent at midnight on the 3rd night. For 8 hours we climbed, firstly up rock and then volcanic ash, the majority of the time in total darkness, slow steps, one step forward, one back. It was tough to keep positive, especially when seeing many of your fellow trekkers turning back due to altitude problems. To keep me going I kept thinking of my reason for being on the mountain, to raise money for Willen.
At 7:58am on 24th October I summated Kilimanjaro.
Climbing Kilimanjaro has been the most physically demanding and mentally challenging experience of my life, and at the same time one of the most rewarding experiences. Not only have I had the opportunity to give something back to Willen, I have also been lucky enough to make 27 new friends.
Regards, Lynn
