Local business woman, Sheila Kemble - also a Trustee of Willen Hospice - is set to take part in yet another challenge to raise funds.
She has personally, to date, raised in excess of £100,000 for the Hospice by taking part in Marathons (London and New York), Bike Rides, Three Peaks Challenge, Sky Diving and it doesn’t stop there. Her latest adventure is to run in the Everest Marathon for which there are only 75 places awarded each year and considered to be the highest and hardest marathon in the World.
The race starts at Everest Base Camp at 5,184 metres and is reached by trekking through the Himalayan foothills of Nepal for 15 days and camping in temperatures as low as -20C. Runners then have up to 12 hours to run back down the route. Athletes in this challenge face extremely difficult conditions in addition to the possibility of inclement weather and altitude sickness – any of which could seriously threaten their success.
Sheila is not put off easily and says:
“This is without doubt my hardest challenge but I have lots of commitment and great support from my family and friends. Willen Hospice has to find in excess of £2m of charitable funding this coming year and like all charities the downturn in the economy is affecting them badly. I hope that my efforts will make a significant contribution to their funding”.
