In March this year Corley Cycles of Milton Keynes announced the formation of a new sponsored road racing team for 2007, known as Team Corley Cycles, which had a new and unique approach to sponsorship and team motivation.
As well as sponsoring and supporting a number of local racing cyclists Team Corley Cycles linked the success of the team in races and other competitive cycling events, throughout the racing season, to raising money for Willen Hospice. Wins and high places in events triggered contributions to a fund amounting to £1,769 this was then matched by team co-sponsors, Trek. A further £827 was raised by the Milton Keynes Cycling Association by placing a £1 levy on race entries for racing at the MK Bowl and other donations were totaled and presented to Julia Rogerson, Events and Promotions Manager for the Hospice.
Phil Corley of Corley Cycles, one time British National Professional Road Race Champion, commented:
“We are delighted to have been able to support local competitive cycle racing as well as help a very worthwhile local charity. The linkage based on success has given the team a unique competitive and motivational edge which has been channeled to helping a great cause. We have been so pleased with the response to this initiative by our sponsors, Trek, and the individual racers that we have committed to undertaking it again next year for the Hospice.”
Julia Rogerson, Events and Promotions Manager, Willen Hospice, commented:
“We are always encouraged by the innovative and exciting ways that our communities come up with to support the Hospice. We are very grateful to everyone involved with Team Corley for enabling this fundraising venture to be so successful and raise such a great amount for the Hospice and are overjoyed that they are going to be doing it for us again next year. The monies raised by Team Corley will be used to sponsor next year’s Willen Hospice London Marathon runners so that all monies raised by the runners can go directly to patient care.”
