Clothing Donations Needed

Willen Hospice has seen a large drop in the quantity of clothing donations since the start of the year and is now making an urgent appeal for more.

Donations have been unusually low since the Christmas period and staff at the sorting warehouse have reported that the sorting bays are practically empty.  This has an inevitable knock on effect for shop sales and funds raised for Willen Hospice.

Lynn Reeves from the Willen Hospice warehouse in Kiln Farm said:  “The volunteers sometimes have to leave by 12.30pm as there is nothing else for them to sort. For the last two weeks all the clothes have been sorted by the end of each day and volunteers are waiting for the van to come in the next morning to bring the next few bags!   We have had slow periods in the past but this is particularly bad.”

Empty Bay Willen Hospice Warehouse

The Hospice relies on donations of clothes to recycle and sell within their high street shops.  Profits from shop sales help to finance patient care for more than 400 terminally ill patients every year. Only a quarter of Hospice funding comes from the government, the rest has to be made up by fundraising in the local community.

Lynn adds:  “We are now up against competition from other charities who collect clothing door-to-door, and bogus operators who make themselves look like charities. We rely on people coming down and dropping their unwanted clothing off and we are grateful for anything we receive.”

The best quality items are sold in the high street shops but Willen Hospice is also able to raise funds from rags.

If  you are having a spring clear out please think of Willen Hospice  - coats, dresses, boots, shoes, trousers for men, women and children are all needed.

Stony Stratford Shop on Facebook

Willen Hospice Stony Stratford Shop is particularly interested in donations of retro/vintage items.  They have recently set up a new Facebook page with the help of Milton Keynes College students.  If you have anything to donate in this line or want to keep an eye on retro/vintage  items on sale please become a friend (if you are on facebook) or just pop in to the shop.
