Life at the Day Hospice

The Day Hospice at Willen offers a friendly, supportive environment for patients who have specialist palliative care needs. Care is provided by a team of professional staff supported by committed volunteers.

Michael"This word ‘Cancer’ seems to terrify people...The Hospice is not God’s waiting room, it is not full of people waiting to die, it is full of people trying to live."

Specialist services

The day hospice helps patients to "be themselves",  have fun and laugh, share experiences with others and experience any of the services we can offer. Patients enjoy a three course meal and are encouraged to talk about their illness in a safe environment.

An important link

The Day Hospice works with other members of the Hospice team including Doctors, Nurses, Community Teams, Social Care Department, Chaplain and Volunteers, and in close liaison with General Practitioners and District Nurses if required.

"The thing that appeals most is the atmosphere of security, safety and comradeship, which I find is very strong and I think that is possibly the greatest thing of all."Kevin

 Referrals and Assessments

All referrals to the Day Hospice are initially for up to three months. The Day Hospice staff will want to be sure that it is appropriate for you - it is a specialist unit and people with social care needs may be referred elsewhere.

After the referral has been made a member of the Day Hospice staff will visit you at home to "say hello" and to check things like transport, if required.

We are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and patients can attend on one of these days.  We also offer a flexible service for patients to attend for any therapies offered should they not wish to stay for the whole day.
