Emotional and Spiritual Care

Serious illness and referral to a hospice can stir up strong emotions and anxieties, such as anger, sadness, regret, or fear.

Why Me?

People ask all kinds of questions like ‘Why me?” and are often worried about how they, or others, will cope with changing circumstances. Some people seek assistance ‘sorting out their affairs’.  Such issues can be as significant for you as your physical symptoms. Willen Hospice staff have considerable experience addressing such concerns, and we invite you and your family to discuss with us anything you wish. No question is too ‘silly’, no concern too trivial.

The Chaplaincy Team

The Hospice has a chaplaincy team, whose interest is certainly not just for those who might call themselves ‘religious’. They are happy to visit you in the Hospice and in your own home.

Steve Barnes

At the Hospice there is a Chapel / Quiet Room for your, or your family’s, use and, for those who wish it, opportunities for prayer, Holy Communion, or even weddings and blessings! We can also put you in touch with other faith or community leaders of your choice.

The Chaplain can be contacted at the Hospice on (01908) 663636, or through any other member of Hospice staff.

Memorial Services

The Hospice holds three memorial services each year at which we remember patients who have died in our care, either at Willen or in the community.

Around the time of the first anniversary families receive a personal invitation. There is plenty of room for as many family and friends as want to come. Names are read and a candle lit for each person we are remembering. The candles can be taken home afterwards.

Memorial serviceThe services are at the Church of Christ the Cornerstone starting at 3.00pm and last for about 45 minutes, followed by refreshments and the chance to meet one or two staff and volunteers they may recognize.

We are also reliant on volunteers who fulfill a number of roles: greeting people as they arrive; singing in our make-shift choir; reading and assisting with refreshments.

If you would like to know more about our memorial services please contact Steve Barnes, our Chaplain, on 01908 663636.
