Lymphoedema is a condition causing swelling of, in most cases limbs, but sometimes other parts of the body. It can be a side affect of disease (Secondary Lymphoedema), for example cancer or treatment such as radiotherapy, or a condition present from birth (Primary Lymphoedema). Whatever the cause, symptoms can be unpleasant and long term so specialist advice, care and support are very important in helping those affected improve their quality of life.
Treatment at Willen Hospice is provided by specialist nurses who have undergone training and are members of the British Lymphology Society.
Until recently the Hospice was only able to provide treatment for Secondary Lymphoedema. However, with recent funding from the Milton Keynes Primary Care Trust (MKPCT) the service is now being expanded to provide treatment for Primary Lymphoedema.
In order to cope with the growing number of patients, additional staff have been recruited and a larger clinical area developed by the Hospice. The service is currently in the developmental stage; working with MKPCT and other health disciplines.
An assessment is made to discover the cause of the oedema and to plan a special treatment programe according to the patient's needs. Treatment includes the application of compression, using multi-layer bandages and hosiery, massage to assist with dispersal of the fluid (lymphatic drainage) and advice on skin care and exercise.
The presence of skin infections (cellulitis) and obesity can make lymphoedema worse and make treatment more difficult. It may be necessary to deal with these conditions before commencing specific treatment for Lymphoedema. This might involve taking antibiotics to clear infection and prevent damage to lymphatic channels or life style changes to encourage weight reduction.
Treatment is offered on an outpatient basis, Monday to Friday. In addition, patients are treated in the Hospice itself and in the community. Due to the demands placed on the service, patients can only be treated in their own home if they are too frail to attend for an appointment.
The lymphoedema team aim to provide treatment that meets each individual's needs, improving the symptoms associated with lymphoedema and improving quality of life.
