The total number of volunteers supporting Willen Hospice is 663. Our volunteers are involved in every aspect of Hospice life, quietly going about their duties, often out of sight, but making a real difference to the lives of patients and families. They not only support the day to day running of the Hospice but also the services that provide income for the Hospice such as:- Willen Hospice Shops, Lottery and Events.
| "The commitment and support of our volunteers is amazing - without them there would be so many areas of Willen Hospice that simply could not function" |
The setting of the Hospice, quietly beside a lake, in beautiful, tranquil gardens, has been a source of comfort and delight for many years. Anton, our facilities manager oversees a team of volunteers and is the "mover and fixer" behind plant acquisitions and garden design.
Some garden areas, like the new bamboo garden, have been funded to a greater or lesser extent by outside benefactors, but the plant stock and features have mainly come from private donations and money from the fundraising efforts of volunteers. The labour needed to create and maintain the gardens comes from a team of weather-hardened volunteers. A love of gardening and a desire to "give something back" persuaded Donald, Jill and Sheila to volunteer. All three had found pleasure and solace in the gardens when relatives and friends were cared for as inpatients and in the Day Hospice.
