Dedicated, passionate people who take on huge challenges to raise funds for us

We are humbled and amazed by their achievements. But what motivates them? We invited one of our challengers, Sarah, who recently completed the Great Wall of China Trek to tell us more.

What motivated you to raise funds for Willen Hospice?

"In 2013 my boyfriend's Mum started to feel unwell and went for tests at the doctors and hospital. It wasn’t until the New Year that we found out she had bowel cancer later stage. This was a shocking blow to the family and changes were made at home so that she could be comfortable. Macmillan nurses came to visit everyday to check on her, give support and advice. It got to the point where being at home was no longer an option and it was suggested that Willen Hospice could provide additional support.

So she was moved to Willen Hospice where the staff were so friendly and helpful. It’s such a peaceful place and she had a room overlooking the lake where she could see the birds and trees which she loved. She was in your care for a month but sadly passed away. During her time at the Hospice I remember the great deal of care and support the Nurses provided. Everyone was so friendly and understood the family's needs. The Hospice Chaplain Steve delivered her service it was so touching and personal.

"The Willen Hospice team not only provide medical services, they understand what it’s like for the individual and their family to live with cancer. They provide essential services and allowed my dear friend to pass away with respect and dignity - something which would not have happened at home. They also provide rehabilitation and respite services. Without Willen our family situation would have been so different even after my boyfriends Mum passed away the Team provided support to the family to help them to deal with their loss through their grief support services. Willen Hospice is a wonderful facility I know a number of friends and colleagues whose loved ones you have supported and I hope that everyone touched by your efforts raises money to ensure that you can continue to support families like ours who needed you help in a time of tremendous strain and sadness. Thank you so much for all your help we will continue to raise money for you and I work for a local company who also have you as a nominated charity.  Best wishes to all the team you did so much for us, you are all so very special. God bless."

Sarah decided to undertake a challenge to raise money for four charities collectively, and opted for the Great Wall of China Trek. She undertook the challenge with seven other dedicated people, as the Great Wall Lions team.

Here is a summary of their epic journey together, to give you a day by day account of how challenging this trip was for the team. If you wish to donate to their challenge, please go to their fundraising page.
