Friends of Willen Hospice

Who are the Friends of Willen Hospice?

The Friends are a group of enthusiastic volunteers from all walks of life, whose aim is to raise enough as much money as possible to support the work of Willen Hospice.

Whether you’re working full time, part time or retired, at college or sixth form, the Friends need your help!

The Friends raise funds in lots of different ways and since launching in 1981 have raised over £2 million to support the care at Willen Hospice.

How you can help the Friends of Willen Hospice

  • Volunteer at one of the many Friends events

  • Join the Friends on their friendly committee

  • Become a member of the Friends for just £15 per year. As a member of the Friends of Willen Hospice you will be entitled to attend the AGM and stand for election to the committee if there is a vacancy, receive copies of newsletters with information about the Hospice, forthcoming events and receive an up-dated report of fundraising efforts.

  • In particular we need some taller, stronger (younger?) volunteers to help us raise and lower our gazebo at the various outdoor events we attend. You would not need to stay all day, nor be present at every event, but help would be greatly appreciated.

  • If you know of or are organizing a fete, car boot or similar at which a Friends stall would be welcome, please contact us (see below)

The Annual General Meeting was held on 21st June 2018 at Willen Hospice. View a copy of the Chairman's Report here.

It now costs £6m a year to run the hospice only 20% of which comes from the NHS. To make up the rest the Hospice needs to raise £13,000 per day (or £9 per minute).  In 2017/18, the Friends donated £65,000 to the Willen Hospice. This was enough to run the Hospice for five days and brought the total contributed by the Friends to £2,105,000. Let’s try for 6 days this year!

At the end of the AGM a cheque for a further £12,500 was handed to Finance Director, Julie Cooper.

Newport Pagnell Singers - Charity of the Year

We are delighted to report that the Newport Pagnell Singers have chosen the Friends of Willen as their Charity for 2018. They have already hosted three fundraising concerts, with a fourth coming up on 8 December: The Christmas Concert at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Newport Pagnell.

Our thanks to the singers who have supported the Friends for the past eight years. Tickets are available from Cambourne Travel, Newport Pagnell High Street or from the Wilson’s, the hardware store in Olney High Street.

Another great supporter of the Friends is the Beehive in Deanshanger, which raises money through a regular Meat Auction. Our Chairman Liz Sparham and Committee member Elaine Dods visited recently to present the fundraisers with a certificate of thanks. They have raised an amazing £32,438.58 to date. Well done to all involved and please keep up the good work. Thank you!

MK Community Car Raffle 2017/8

Friends manned several slots during the sales period, selling raffle tickets to win this year’s grand prize, a Volkswagen up! beats 1.0 90 PS TSI 5-speed Manual 5 Door in white, which was situated in the Mall outside of Next during the festive season. Ticket sales were a bit disappointing, BUT we did sell the winning ticket, which earned us a £100 bonus.

Bucket Collections

In the last financial year buckets collections raised almost £10,000. We have a number in the pipeline for this year and if you can spare an hour or two to help out sometime it would be very much appreciated and it can be very rewarding! Thanks to Tesco, their customers and all those volunteers who made this possible.

  • In April (26-27) the bucket collection at Tesco Bletchley store raised a total of £1,242.70.

  • In May (18-19) the Bucket Collection at Buckingham’s Tesco Store raised a magnificent £1,384,37.

  • June 15th saw our volunteers at Tesco Wolverton, raising another £806.31.

Newport Pagnell Carnival

The sun shone and the people of Newport were as usual very generous and we raised just shy of £500 from the Parade collection and the Tombola at our stall on the field. Our thanks to everyone who helped.

Collecting Tins
The collecting tins placed in shops, offices, pubs and cafes are an important way of raising funds.  In the year April 2017 to March 2018 the total raised from the tins came to £25,158.55.We always need more volunteers who are willing to take responsibility for looking after a few tins in their area This involves making sure that existing tins are regularly changed and the full ones returned to the Friends Treasurer.  Finding new venues to place the tins would also be a huge help.
