At Willen Hospice we believe it is important to use our skills to train the next generation of Health & Social Care professionals.
We have links with several universities to help students gain practical skills in palliative care. This can include nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, doctors, paramedics and art therapists who stay with us for anything from a day to several weeks.
All students work alongside an experienced member of staff during their time here. If you would prefer not to have a student involved with your care, that fine, just let one of our staff know.
Useful Information for students
The hospice welcomes students from across Health & Social Care professions, recognising their need to gain practical skills as part of their education.
Here is some information to inform students coming to Willen Hospice as part of their placement time.
The Practice Development Department coordinates student placements and insight visits. Placements are organised by individual universities, insight visits can be organised by students using the form on our main website in the section ‘How we care’ for clinicians
If you wish to arrange a pre-placement visit, phone the main hospice number 01908 663636. They will put you through to the team you are working with. If you are not sure, Practice Development may be able to help.
Car parking is free at Willen - we ask that you use car park 3, which is just beyond the main entrance on the right.
Bus 2 runs from the city centre and railway station to Willen Village, just a short walk from the hospice
All visitors sign in at reception on arrival. The receptionist will inform the team, you have arrived.
Students spend time in different clinical areas, to gain a wider understanding of the services provided and how patient centred care happens when they work together. Students will have the plan at the beginning of their placement, mentors can advise on other visits that might be appropriate. Due to student numbers, it is not always possible to reorganise missed visits.
