Willen Hospice Nurses

Health & Social Care Students

At Willen Hospice we believe it is important to use our skills to train the next generation of Health & Social Care professionals.

We have links with several universities to help students gain practical skills in palliative care. This can include nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, doctors, paramedics and art therapists who stay with us for anything from a day to several weeks.

All students work alongside an experienced  member of staff during their time here. If you would prefer not to have a student involved with your care, that fine, just let one of our staff know.

Useful Information for students

The hospice welcomes students from across Health & Social Care professions, recognising their need to gain practical skills as part of their education.

Here is some information to inform students coming to Willen Hospice as part of their placement time.

The Practice Development Department coordinates student placements and insight visits. Placements are organised by individual universities, insight visits can be organised by students using the form on our main website in the section ‘How we care’ for clinicians

If you wish to arrange a pre-placement visit, phone the main hospice number 01908 663636. They will put you through to the team you are working with. If you are not sure, Practice Development may be able to help.

Getting here

Car parking is free at Willen - we ask that you use car park 3, which is just beyond the main entrance on the right.

Bus 2 runs from the city centre and railway station to Willen Village, just a short walk from the hospice

On arrival

All visitors sign in at reception on arrival. The receptionist will inform the team, you have arrived.

Students spend time in different clinical areas, to gain a wider understanding of the services provided and how patient centred care happens when they work together.  Students will have the plan at the beginning of their placement, mentors can advise on other visits that might be appropriate.  Due to student numbers, it is not always possible to reorganise missed visits.

Dress Code

Uniform is worn in IPU, Hospice at Home, Lymphoedema & Wellbeing.  For social work or medical students working alongside nursing teams, we ask you wear flat, covered, shoes, plain trousers and a short sleeved shirt.

Smart dress is required while with Patient & Family Services, Clinical Nurse Specialist and the Medical Team.

Please make sure your mentor has access to either your online or paper portfolio. This will help you to get the most out of your time at the hospice and meet your learning outcomes.

As well as gaining clinical skills during your time at Willen, there are both face to face and on line learning opportunities available. All Students are encouraged to attend monthly supervision sessions.

If you require any additional support during your time at Willen; either emotionally, educationally or with a disability, please talk to your mentor, manager or one of the Practice Development team.

Emergencies

In an emergency, dial 999. During the daytime, the receptionist will call the emergency services. Overnight, the nurse in charge of the in-patient unit takes on this role.

Breaks Times

We have staff fridges for you to store your packed lunch. Alternatively, students may order meals at Reception, by 10am for lunch and by 4pm for supper. There is a small charge for this.
