Supporting young people

How can we help?

  • We’re here to directly support children and young people whose loved ones have a life limiting condition and have been cared for by Willen Hospice.
  • We can also offer advice to parents or professionals who are concerned about a child or young person and how they may be coping.
  • We support families too, by talking to them about the emotions children may be experiencing.

Our service recognises the impact that living with a person with a life limiting condition can have on children and young people. We recognise that grief can occur even before the loss of a loved one, so we provide our service pre and post bereavement. They may need one to one and family support, or we could signpost them to other community resources e.g. Young Carers.

We help young people and children to get their ‘voices’ heard and offer them the opportunity to talk about their feelings, concerns and wishes in a safe environment. After the death of their loved one we help them create special memories that they can treasure later on in their lives.

Sometimes, art therapy can be a useful way to help children and young people explore and process their feelings associated with grief, loss and bereavement. Art therapy may be able to support you and your child to better understand and express your emotions, until you feel ready and able to talk about them.

We offer one to one support to children who are facing, or have experienced bereavement. This can be provided at the Hospice, school or at home. We help children to express themselves by creating memory boxes, through craft activities and to help their understanding with specialist books.

Teenagers can often feel isolated when they are grieving or bereaved. Our one-to-one support can help a young person to make sense of the life changes they are experiencing and enables them to develop coping strategies for the future.
