Throughout January, mother and daughter duo, Emma and 10 year old Amber Coates, ran through snow and freezing rain to complete their Race at your Pace challenge.

Amber set herself the goal to run 30 miles, and Emma 50 miles. Almost every day they laced up their trainers on and braved the elements, including a near-blizzard, to get their miles in. Finally, on Friday 29 January they completed their challenge, finishing outside the Hospice at Willen Lake.

Emma said: “We are so pleased to be able to do something in aid of Willen Hospice, and to try and give a little something back to help.

Amber is only 10 years old and already has a great passion to help others. We were up and out at 7.30am some days to finish our run before Amber started her online schoolwork. It’s been freezing cold sometimes, but it didn’t stop Amber wanting to do it. As I’m sure you can imagine, I’m extremely proud of her.”

Dawn Clark, Challenges Fundraiser, said: “Taking part in third-party challenges, like Emma and Amber did, is a great way to raise money for Willen Hospice. There’s usually a small fee to sign up, but in return you get guidance, resources, and in Emma and Amber’s case, a medal! They set out to raise £100 and ended on £320, which goes to show what can happen when you just go for it.

“It continues to be an extremely tough time for the Hospice, with our nurses and doctors working harder than ever, and at the same time, our fundraising income taking a hit from having to close our shops and run limited events. It’s people like Emma and Amber, and the support from the community, which keeps us going.”
